When iPods first hit the market, iPod batteries followed the pattern of a number of smaller electronic units and came with a battery that was completely enclosed in the unit. Removing the iPod battery was discouraged. Instead, consumers were encouraged to purchase a refurbished replacement iPod when the battery had lost its ability to charge.

As new versions of the unit were manufactured, the design was changed slightly, so that owners could purchase replacement iPod batteries.
